Fans hoping to get baked freely while seeing their favorite artist at Coachella are out of luck. Even though the festival falls on 4/20, Coachella’s website outlines that “marijuana and marijuana products aren’t allowed inside the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.”
TMZ notes that the city of Indio, where Coachella is located, imposes strict rules on marijuana use. Indio is not allowing anyone to sell, cultivate, or distribute cannabis within the city. California’s legalization of recreational marijuana use went into effect on January 1, but the law allows towns to decide whether or not to allow recreational sales. Indio is among the cities that decided not to.
Even though it prohibits the sale and distribution of weed products, Indio will still have to allow small amounts of marijuana in personal possession. Still, you can’t smoke in public. For those coming out of state for the festival looking to enjoy California’s new law, they’ll have to head to the nearby cities of Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Desert Hot Springs to pick up.
This year Eminem, Beyoncé, and The Weeknd, are headlining the two-weekend festival. If you didn’t get a chance to cop tickets, bad news: Tickets for the festival sold out within hours. But given the marijuana restrictions, there’s no shame in lighting up and watching your favorite acts on YouTube’s livestream from home.
