Your favorite monster family is back and going on a much needed Summer Vacation aboard a luxury monster cruise ship. However, the dream vacation turns into a nightmare when Mavis (Selena Gomez) realizes her father, Drac (Adam Sandler) has fallen for the mysterious captain of the ship, Ericka (Kathryn Hahn), who has a dangerous secret that could destroy all of monsterkind.
With the exception of any and all superhero movies, I’m not much for these animated kid movies, but when you have kids, they’re all they tend to want to watch. Once in a while you actually find a few that are fun and funny and most importantly keep the child’s attention. The Hotel Transylvania series has been one of the few I have enjoyed over the years. Probably because I like seeing the new way they present these classic monster characters to a new generation.
In this latest film, Summer Vacation, you’re getting exactly what you would expect. A lot of over the top enthusiasm from it’s lead character, Drac, a calm & cool Mavis… and fun awkwardness from the monster entourage. Kathryn Hahn’s, Captain Ericka , I think, was a nice counter part to Drac because she can be exactly the same way. A few times I thought there were some scenes that were too adult and over the head for kids, but it gave me a nice chuckle.
