I know we’re only a month and a half into the new year, but it seems like it’s been a while since we’ve had a decent rom-com to enjoy on the big screen. And let’s be honest, not all rom-com’s are very memorable. Jennifer Lopez should know, she’s actually starred in a few of those forgetful features. But she’s giving it a go again, this time with one of the industry’s more likable entertainers, Owen Wilson. Still, just because a movie stars two fan-favorite leads doesn’t always mean it’s gonna win over audiences.
I’ll be the first to admit, I really don’t buy the combo of Jennifer and Owen as a couple. On or off the screen. And since they try to get this WTF couple going almost from the get-go I spent almost the whole movie sayin… Nope, I’m not buying it. However, putting that aside and trying to enjoy the movie for what it is, I did notice I was smiling from time to time and even let out a lil chuckle here and there. Granted “Marry Me” won’t’ go down as one of the great romantic comedies of all time, like say a “Sixteen Candles” or “When Harry Met Sally”, but I don’t think it tries to be either. I see it just trying to give you a nice two-hour experience. And it does that.
Now the only real complaint I have about this film is its predictability. It follows the checklist of rom-com movie making. Like a lot of other films of the same genre, no chances were taken to try something new. This is a good reason why this is only a good film that you’ll only take the time to see once.
