For the past few weeks, other films have tried but failed to knock Avengers: End Game out of the top spot at the box office… Will one of these three newcomers be able accomplish that very task???
Pokemon Detective Pikachu Having kids who grew up when the show first hit the airwaves, I was pretty familiar with what Pokemon was. And that had me kinda excited to see what this one was all about. Unfortunately, and maybe it’s just me, I just didn’t find it very entertaining.
Granted there were some fun moments, it just really wasn’t what I had expected. The best thing about it was the animation of the Pokemon characters. They looked pretty right on to the cartoon versions of them.
The story was fine, but for someone like myself, who isn’t a big fan, this probably isn’t a film for you… however, those who are fans, I think they’ll enjoy it more than the rest of us.
The Hustle This was a comedy I was looking forward to watching. Although I’m not a big Anne Hathaway fan, I do like Rebel Wilson’s comedy, and I thought these two made for a nice on scree duo.
Story wise, it was pretty basic. Two con artists trying to live a life of luxury, stealing from rich men. There were some fun and funny moments here and there that were really the saving point for me. But trying to pull off an Oceans 11 film with only 2 people… not gonna work.
Personally, I did like this one, but not enough to see it again. I think this is gonna be one of those films that if you take the time to check it out, you won’t be disappointed but you’ll probably be ok if you never saw it again too.
Tolkien The man who wrote some of the most incredible stories in history, J.R.R. Tolkien, now has a movie made about him.
Starring Nicholas Hoult as Tolkien and Lily Collins as the future Mrs. Tolkien, Edith. I really liked this one. But I know it’s not gonna be for everyone.
It tends to be on the slow side, as the story takes us back to when Tolkien was a young boy in school. We see the friendships he made, in good time and bad times, and how these friendships became inspirations for his future projects. And even though they didn’t talk about everything that later became part of his stories, there were plenty of easter eggs in the background that are recognizable. Personally, I was hoping for more, but still ok with what I saw.
Great chemistry between both our leads, Nicholas and Lily. And I liked how they made sure to give just enough attention to their love story as they did Tolkien’s development into a writer.
So if you’re looking for something a little more serious and fascinating… Take the time to see this one.
