Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage Nationwide

law of the land

The United States Supreme Court has decided that same-sex couples have the right to marry in all 50 states.

The court’s 5-4 ruling, issued today, means that the 14 states that currently prohibit gay marriage, all of them in the South and Midwest, will have to stop enforcing their bans on same-sex marriage.

“In a world in which gay and lesbian couples live openly as our neighbors, they raise their children side by side with the rest of us, they contribute fully as members of the community…it is simply untenable to suggest that they can be denied the right of equal participation in an institution of marriage,” Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. argued on the White House’s behalf in April.

President Obama tweeted out his support
