Your Quick & Simple Review: “Judas And The Black Messiah”

2020, due to the pandemic, didn’t have very many movies that really packed a punch.  That all changes big time with the new movie, based on a true story, from director, Shaka King, Judas And The Black Messiah.  With an outstanding cast, led by Daniel Kaluuya & LaKeith Stanfield, we get a powerful look at the story that led to the murder of Black Panther Chairman, Fred Hampton.

Let’s start off giving credit where credit is due.  Daniel Kaluuya delivers a spectacular performance as the Black Panther leader, Fred Hampton.   Daniel is quickly coming to the level of those great actors like Sidney Poitier, James Earl Jones & Denzel Washington.  Those guys can’t do a bad performance, ever.  The strength of his performance is definitely one that should and will be recognized during award season.

As far as the story goes, I loved how director Shaka King got me emotionally involved with what I was watching.  Learning at the same time, that there’s always more to the story that can usually be one-sided.  Especially when it comes to how we see Fred Hampton.  He was a strong and loud leader but he was also a man who loved and I’m glad we got to see that too.

As far as the rest of the cast goes, each one of them added something special to this film.  Stanfield & Plemons, as well as Martin Sheen, covered in make-up, deliver elegant and vital performances that make this one of the first must-see films of 2021.

Judas And The Black Messiah is streaming on HBO Max as well as playing in theaters now.
